Percy Jones
Percy Jones, UK fretless bass player, one of the original proponents of fretless bass in rock music, he came to prominence as bass player for 'Brand X' UK fusion band of the seventies and early eighties. Jones style is highly original having been influenced by jazz upright players (esp. Charles Mingus). Often overlooked by fans of fusion in favor of the more flamboyant Jaco Pastorius, Jones belongs in that group of elite serious bass players like Anthony Jackson, Stanley Clarke, and the also overlooked, Michael Henderson-of the early seventies Miles Davis Electric band. Jones work with Brian Eno on the album Another Green world, predated the spatial visceral bass sounds that would come to dominate techno, house and hiphop music twenty years later. His recordings with Eno and Brand X are a lesson and primer in originality and creative use of tone and phrasing, while always keeping the groove pinned down with a solid bass line.
